While visitng Peter Van Dijck's personal site I noticed a site map with humans interacting with it. I was enchanted and excited... what a wonderful way to connect personas with architecture (potentially) and thus humanize one's work. I'm only sorry the big version didn't have these people in it.
It also caused me to fantasize about a map this big, painted by a muralist. At CIQ, we're working on a project that will result in a map at least this big, but more because of site size rather than map size... (shudder).
The front page has been waiting in the wings for a little while, I broke down and launched it. It will change more; I will keep experimenting. I'm sticking with css, despite misgivings, because I do believe it is the right way to go, for so many reasons (many of which well articulated in Owen's Design Rant)
I especially want to thank Mark Newhouse for his wonderful article on css flexible layouts: you rock.
Please resize it -- hit F11 and go full screen, make it narrow... mark's a genius.
NN4.7 users (and lower), sorry, you are still stuck with this.
MORE...Weird-- I had planned to do a different design for my front page everyday in February, as a way of stretching my new design muscles (still a 98 pound weakling!) then I got slammed with work. But I see someone else has got the time...
