While poking about preparing for my trip, I can across GreatBuildings.com, a very interesting site of information on the most renowed architectures of the world. Then that led me to Artifice DesignWorkshop Lite - Free 3D home design, walkthrough, and rendering software. I wonder how horrible it would be to try to model websites in 3-D, or if there is even a point. I know when I design the architecture of a website in my head, it is always 3-D.

At any rate, I had Hot Sauce's map of Yahoo running at one time, and it was a full-blown 3d implementation of Yahoo's tree structure. It was quite fun and natural to use. Hope someone is developing a similar project in open source, or at least for X11...

I know when I think about my site maps in "3D" its more like 2D+Z ... it's a 2D map with zoomable details. I could be at any point, but I would only be looking in one direction - looking directly down onto the map. As my mental eye zooms in different details reveal themselves, sometimes in layers.

Yes, exactly. I see a 3-d spiderweb in which my mind holds and I can easily traverse internally-- if someone asks me if this links to that, or what a certain function does I can visualize it as either a static or self inventing webline. it's pretty weird. When holding very complex maps in my head, I feel like it's a giant model balanced on the top of my head, and I have to walk carefully so as not to cause it collapse. The web is definately a three dimensional space for me, but more-- maybe four, including time for dynamic structures.
