Location, Path & Attribute Breadcrumbs was Keith Instone's poster at ASIS&T's IA summit. If you dont' mind holding yoru head sideways, it is a very interesting read.
I like breadcrumbs-- they are both a navigational widget and a way to broaden your search.
You should be able to click on the Acrobat Reader toolbar for the option to rotate the ppt.
Breadcrumbs are also nice for providing context for where you are in an information system.
The attribute breadcrumbs have always seemed helpful, particularly when accompanying a search result page. Often on large sites there are many paths to one point and various sets of metadata that can attract the user of the information to that endpoint. Having the attribute breadcrumbs for various of heirarchies to the main page provides users not only a means of finding not only what they are looking for, but other related possibilities and a better understanding of the site's informaiton structure. Breadcrumbs not only help give context, but also provide a method for enculturation to the site's or organization's information structure.
I updated my files from the IA Summit. Now there is a single PDF that includes the overview, the slides (rotated) and new attendee comments.
The new file is at http://keith.instone.org/breadcrumbs/Instone-Breadcrumbs-IASummit.pdf (550K). (Sorry, tagging that as a URL doees not seem to work from my Mac.)
