le site du jour

Several blogs pointed to The New Architecture of Informationwith the blurb "The first generation of Websites has been built with a radical misunderstanding and misrepresentation of users' expectations and practices." yet no one felt they should mention its actually "Les nouvelles architectures de l'information" and in French. The link the blogs give drop you right into the French paper with no sign of a link to the English translation, or to anything else, of that matter.

Go to text-e.org, and click "English", then follow the links to the paper from the front page. If you don't read French. I'm sure it's much sexier in French. But then, I'm biased.

Great resource. Thanks for sharing. The article really made alot of sense. In some way, I totally saw my own career be shaped by the transition of the static Web to dynamic material(utilizing metadata). I'm wondering though what is going to be the next big thing. I love being on the "edge."

The problem is that the URL for the article is the same for both English and French. If you navigate to the piece in the way you describe, the site recognizes that you've selected English for that session and serves up all content accordingly. But if you jump straight to the article without having initiated a session, the site defaults to French.

I'm sure they thought they were being exceedingly clever by making the language selection 'invisible', but the result is that they discourage people from bookmarking and/or disseminating links to their site.

A bit of URL hacking gets you the correct URL for the English version of the “read this text online” version.
