off to La Jolla!

For the ACIA conference. And then off to Holland to eat pickled herring with the inlaws. Updates may not happen...

you say it's your birthday?

Got a Compaq mp3 player for my birthday yesterday. It has really nice affordances. The play button is a nice large button in the center where my thumb can find it without me having to pull the player our of my pocket to look, while the other buttons are more discreet, and require conscious selection. Another nice feature: a lock to disable the buttons, so if you want to stick it in your pocket you can't accidentally push one. And screen lights up when you press a button, and turns itself off a few moments later. These tiny considerations are what creates a positive user experience. IA could learn a lot from product design.

Wish I could say the same for Compaq's site. let's play my favorite game: where would you click to find out about your MP3 player?

a friend in madrid writes

"went to the prado today. loved the goya black paintings and the bosch.
funny though, i kept thinking, man, this museum has serious usability
issues. the maps sucked and everyone seemed lost. see. your evil ways are
never far from me:)"

once you start thinking about usability, the world looks different

IA$

An informal salary survey on CHI-WEB and SIGIA lists turned up these results. I guess this is what we're worth!

a story

I'm guessing this is not the first time a reporter has had a story s/he wrote so badly edited and rewritten as to damage their reputation, but the internet makes it possible for the word to get out. Tell a friend. Business 2.0, sleazy journalism, and me

size matters

A very good thread in the CHI-WEB archives on relative font sizes. Both arguments for and techiniques for accomplishing.
