10/10/2001 "V-2, version 2"

A new v-2.org launched sometime yesterday, still full of content yuminess but with a new shiny exterior. I'm refraining from commenting until I get used to the new creature, since I --like so many folks-- have that first "change bad" feeling before settling into a comfortable relationship with a new design. But I'd love to hear what you all think.

, from oldest to newest:

I like the look, but it barfs in Mozilla and NS 6.1 (which view to the world encouraged by environment).

I am not that big of a fan for the windowed information. The text is a nice graphical touch, but I find it to be not that useable to scan with my eye to find information I am looking for. I prefer to not use the scroll bar to scan information in a small window, but that is just me.

The page build is also rather slow on a T-1 line on a Win NT box with 256MB RAM and 16MB graphics card. Each page change requires 10 to 15 seconds of delay.

Overview is pretty, but not that usable to get at the content I enjoy.

First time I've ever visited V-2

Processor heavy, freezes up my whole machine (PIII-750, 256MB ram, IE6) for about 3 seconds on every page view.

I don't like frames!

I have had a lot of dialog with Adam over the past few days... while my opinion about the new redesign of the site still stands (see my comments from 10-10-01), it is important to point out that we all learn by experience. I suspect that the next redesign will be a sharp turn back to the roots of what v-2.org used to be about.

I feel a feature article coming on... got to go.

Well, it's been a lesson for my own redesign, that's for sure. I've slowly been improving Eh, bit by bit subtle-like. I have the new order ready to go and just have not invested the time to make it happen. Maybe I won't get the flu shot, and ... oh, my god, I'm fantasizing about having walking pneumonia! I'm sick in the head...

Anyhow, I've settled down with v-2, and here is what I think so far:

happies:
1. I think by moving to a slicker design from a jakob-esque design may will him a new audience that needs to hear his voice... the k10 kids.
2. I'm happy to see him add a blog. Adam always has interesting things to say, and I'm happy to see them as half-formed thoughts as well as his full eassys (I hope the blog doesn't steal from his essay writing!)

sads:
1. the search by relevence could be great, but as far as I can tell, it's nearly useless.. one has to look at the colors while rolling over the metanav to decode its use. a damn shame. labels, v-2, labels!!!! and the search by text next to it just makes it more mysterious. sigh.
2. speed kills-- it's just too slow and big. I'm already somewhere else reading an article by the time the stuff on the front page loads.
3. I have no idea what is in the site. for the first time on v-2, I want a site map (and no, david, that does *not* prove your point)

I know a lot of work has been put into this redesign, and I know adam is of two minds about it. I hope he takes a stern look at what makes him happy and sad about it, and looks at evolving rather than doing another huge redesign quite yet. Personally, stripping some of the big files, adding a few labels, and a general slimming and the new v-2 could be sweet.

oh, and a site map.
