"Butterfly ballots" like those used in Palm Beach County are significantly more confusing than standard ballots, and middle-aged voters using butterfly ballots are far more likely to vote mistakenly for a candidate they don't support, according to Canadian research being published in a scientific journal. http://washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A6571-2000Nov30.html

Boston Globe: Monsieur, do you Yahoo? But rather than rail against the injustice of the Gomez decision, let's focus on a more practical question: Can it be enforced? Can an Internet company block access to citizens of a particular country, while leaving the rest of us free to surf wherever we wish? http://www.boston.com/dailyglobe2/335/business/Monsieur_do_you_Yahoo_+.shtml

The big lie of computer security is that security improves by imposing complex passwords on users. In real life, people write down anything they can't remember. Security is increased by designing for the way humans actually behave.
NEWS & EDITORIAL
International Buy Nothing Day is celebrated around the world on November 24, 25, or 26, depending on which country you're in. This is a day that's set aside to encourage people to think carefully about what they spend their money on.
However, along with the increasingly popular Buy Nothing Day, there has been one major self-inflicted impediment in the advertising/business world's quest for global acceptance of shop-till-you-drop syndrome. That is, quite simply, that online consumers, tired of being ignored by the companies they'd like to do business with, are talking to each other in ever-increasing numbers. http://www.nua.ie/surveys/analysis/weekly_editorial/archives/issue1no154.html

OPENING THANG
So, I had a very traditional beige-plate thanksgiving
(for my foreign readers, that's a plate with beige turkey, white potatoes with beige gravy all over them, beige stuffing and green bean casserole -- which is typically beige, since it's made with cream of mushroom soup. It's a meal that has remained unchanged since 1953-- think "happy days").
The upside is that I managed not to stuff myself, and here's hoping if y'all did, at least it wasn't with something beige. sigh. If only we had cooked from this http://www.epicurious.com/e_eating/e04_thanks/main.html
Also, my blog wasn't getting updated because of a blogger bug. But I was able to fix it, and there are bunch of ramblings up there now. enjoy. http://www.eleganthack.com/blog/index.html
USABILITY MATTERS
from InteractionArchoitect.com
"Our exploratory user study on the use of a major portal site in Belgium shows that a category of "skeptical Internet users" has abandoned searching the web. The skeptical Internet user has made a return-on-investment evaluation of his Internet experience, and has come to the conclusion that the return on some sites is just not worth the investment of his personal time and energy."
