What is Gleanings?

Gleanings is a newsletter full of stuff I find online and on the various mailing lists I'm on. It will not be prettily formatted (plain text only), it will have a lot of bay-area specific stuff in it (such as interesting bay-chi meeting announcements), it will not come out at regular intervals (could be daily, could be weekly, could experience long unexplained periods of silence...) there will be no ads in it, and at no point will it stay on topic.

It's easy to subscribe and unsubscribe, so feel free to try it out!

making the case for qualitative research. good article!

davenet.userland.com/2000/07/08/whyICameToSilconValley
he gets it: "The rage of Napster is not P2P, it's music! Get a clue."
http://davenet.userland.com/2000/07/08/whyICameToSilconValley

http://strom.com/awards/205.html
he gets it: "A number of web storefronts are offering up specialized shopping sections for women. Call it eCommerce for her. It is almost always a really bad idea."

http://www.nytimes.com/library/tech/00/03/biztech/technology/29brie.html
"NY Times: From March 29, 2000; Since Women Ask for Directions, the Web is
Being Remapped" not really certain that I like this.

"The Alertbox for July 9 is now online at:
http://www.useit.com/alertbox/20000709.html

Experience with WAP in Europe shows that it is hard to use. Because of the
miserable usability of the small phones, services must be re-designed for
each handset, increasing maintenance costs."

if you like pop-philosophy, read ten principles for the 21st century
http://werbach.com/whirrled/ten_principles.html
some are true, some are obvious, some are useless, and some are little koans to think about.

Today, glassdog is the source from which all good things flow. http://glassdog.com/
I got my glassdog newsletter today. in it were these sites (these are my descriptions of said sites)

http://www.pinstruck.com/ You can send a voodoo curse to anyone anonymously. As well as it being a fun site, I also really like the navigation, especially the way they show where you are in the site.

http://www.waytoopersonal.com/ tales of online dating.. the ads and the response from sweet and mushy to friggin bizarre

"at the mit media laboratory aesthetics + computation group we work toward the design of advanced system architectures and thought processes to enable the creation of (as yet) unimaginable forms and spaces" Which means you are on your own here... http://acg.media.mit.edu/

glassdog has a fun feature called Overheard. http://glassdog.com/overheard/index.html

a few

OVERHEARD for June 5, 2000

The Setting: At work

The Players: Two Delivery drivers

The Witness: I was watching ladies' tennis on TV in the office

OVERHEARD:

He said: That mobile phone is gonna give you cancer!

He observed: It's nothing compared to those cigarettes that you smoke!

He said: Yeah, but I have enjoyed every cigarette
and you haven't enjoyed every conversation on that phone.

OVERHEARD for June 12, 2000

The Setting: On the street

The Players: Two guys

The Witness: They were walking toward me

OVERHEARD:

He said: That's Serbo-Croatian for "We are all dentists here."

and finally glassdog offers some odd suggestions for .sig's, which lead to lovely strange musings

"to the girl sitting next to me in math class:
if you don't stop clicking your tongue stud,
i may actually stab you with my pencil.
and be warned; i sharpen it often."

"a totalitarian dream--
i was surrounded by four japanese soldiers and four british soldiers.
they were thought police, rounding up people and herding them into a mall.
matt ran up the down escalator and escaped.
lael, smoking because he thought it was a godard film, went invisible--
literally--but he was still pushed into the "soft biology" wing
where he was to work.
drew langhofer was herded into the sculpting wing.
i was almost herded, but then i woke up with my alarm."

now you can go to glassdog and sign up to receive his occasionally published, quirk filled newsletter too.
