At first I thought this quite wrong-- it's certainly non-standard. But really, take a look. You know where you are, you know how many pages are (generally) and you know where the next and previous page is. One issue is "next" is so often the far right item in other pagination tools, I can see some misclicks occurring. But it's a rather elegant little tool, and considering the audience is web developers, why not?
